Another great team result in the NYAL
Just two weeks after the big freeze at Lee Valley, the 2nd
NYAL match led us to much warmer Croydon. Facing two teams placed ahead of us
in the league, and hit by illness and injuries, our hopes for a good result
were rather modest. Yet, our athletes exceeded any expectations with a flurry
of no less than 50 PB’s and 23 individual wins. Score updates during the match
suggested another close result – and tight indeed it was. A late surge
saw us leapfrogging Woking and finishing 2nd just 8.5 points behind
Camberley. Just one more athlete in the team, and we could even have won the
match. The final score was:
Camberley 472
points
Kingston & Poly 463.5
points
Woking 440.5
points
One of the highlights of the day were the middle distance
races. Gaby Miles set the scene with an emphatic win in the U17 800m (AAA grade
4 performance). Many 1st and 2nd places followed as
K&P athletes dominated the races with astute runs. In the sprints, Tucker
Bryant (100m grade 3/200m grade 4) and Alex Mackintosh ensured clear wins.
Sheer dominance was the hallmark of William van Klaveren winning Hammer, Discus
(grade 3) and Javelin (grade 2) with new PB’s. Two double wins also in the High
Jump (Laura Darcey/Natasha Baugh and Alex Mackintosh/James Khan). Notable AAA
grade 4 performances came from Stephanie Mitchell (70H), Nadia Allan (800m),
Nina Gibbins (LJ), Laura Darcey (HJ), Ellie Manhire (Shot) and Rahannah
Gillette-Vernon (Javelin). Besides individual excellence the team success was
achieved by our athletes’ willingness to fill in wherever needed, like sprinter
Ali Kokaz stepping in for the 4x400 relay at very short notice. Great results
altogether, not least our debutants Natasha Baugh, Ellie Manhire, Laura
Dunkling, Bridget Langford, Prerana Kaneri, Danielle Williams and Ben Grosvenor
– well done everyone!

A big thanks goes to everybody who supported the team,
notably Gill Broderick, Mary Dimbleby, Lyn Edwards and Richard Vassall for
their help with organising the team, Maurice Joyce and David Barrington who again
doubled up as minibus drivers and track officials, and Susanne Dietrich, Tony
Hart, Sharon Henriquez and Cynthia Mitchell who were out in the field as
officials all day.
Two excellent team results away from home in a row, many
PB’s and AAA grade performances, several K&P athletes well placed in the
Surrey rankings – this promises to be a great track season. Under the
NYAL rules where the league position is determined by total points scored, we
are now mid-field in the league. Our next match is on 20 June in Kingston. We have the momentum on our side. Let’s get everyone
out and get a BIG result.
