Good top-half finish for K&P U13/U15 YDL team

Having won promotion to division 1 last year, we expected to face tougher competition this season. Our first match on 3 May, away at Ashford, fulfilled our expectation. Nearly all events were very competitive. Having no starter and an initial mess-up of the track results left the organisers with no option but to focus on seeing the match through rather than providing up-to-date scores.

From the track results and the odd report from the field we could gather that the result was close, only 45 points between 2nd and 5th place in the end. Despite the uncertainty of the team score, our athletes finished on a high when our U15 girls’ 4x100 squad (Pippa Earley, Rhianna Reynolds, Amy Counihan, Ella Eze) won the relay with a new Club record. Our team, though not yet at full strength, finished in a very credible 3rd place overall, fully confirming that we are competitive also in the higher division.

41 athletes altogether undertook the journey to the Kent countryside – a remarkable turnout, particularly considering that our U15 boys’ team was far from complete. Nearly all our athletes achieved PB’s. In addition, we had a number of very good AAA graded results: Grade 4’s from Hannah Lester (70H), Amy Richardson (75H), Rhianna Reynolds (HJ), Thomas White (100m, 200m), Jorge Beltrao (800m), Matthew Hall (1500m), Daniel Merighi (1500m), Aaron Bruce (800m), Sam Shaw (1500m), Zak Wort (1500m), grade 3’s from Darcy Bourne (HJ), Pippa Earley (100m, LJ,) Rhianna Reynolds (LJ), excellent grade 2’s from Amelia Bell (75m, 150m), Darcy Bourne (LJ), Ella Eze (100m), Luke Newell (JT), and spectacular grade 1’s from Ella Eze (200m), Molly O’Sullivan (1500m), Pippa Earley (75H) and Sophie Dimbleby (JT, new Club record).

Thanks to everyone for their help during the match, in particular our novice track judge Colin Watts, timekeeper Maurice Joyce, and our field official team of Kevin Bruce, Susanne Dietrich, Mary Dimbleby, Karen Earley, Dorinda Lester, Renzo di Libero, Mark Reynolds, and Ali Richardson.

Our team:

U13 Girls: Hetty Arnfield, Amelia Bell, Darcy Bourne, Imogen Busa, Hannah Lester, Jessica Lillywhite, Ella O’Sullivan, Louisa Stoney, Gemma Watts

U15 Girls: Eleanor Bartle, Kathryn Bartle, Isabella Busa, Amy Counihan, Sophie Dimbleby, Pippa Earley, Ella Eze, Annabel Hobday, Rebecca Keddie, Leila Legris, Caitlin Matthews, Mollie O’Sullivan, Rhianna Reynolds, Amy Richardson

U13 Boys: Jorge Beltrao, Matthew Hall, Luca di Libero, Aaron Marlow, Daniel Merighi, Luke Newell, Benjamin Taplin, Thomas White, Tom Williams, Olly Wilson

U15 Boys: Michael Brazil, Aaron Bruce, Alex Burrows, Charlie Dugdale, George Medd-Tacon, Will Rowe, Sam Shaw, Zak Wort

With the teams in division South 1 all close together and last year’s Premier club Winchester surprisingly at the bottom, the next matches will be interesting. We have to keep the momentum going, build on our strong start and, with some more U15 boys, try challenging the leading clubs.

The next YDL match is on Saturday 31 May at Withdean Sports Centre, Brighton.
