Other commitments and injuries meant that there was a team of five women for the final SCVAC at Wimbledon Park Athletics track last Monday evening. However, with the team participating in several events we gallantly finished 2nd place on the night to Epsom and Ewell Harriers. Both Nicki Murphy & Susanne Dietrich (both multi-event athletes) covered five events each, plus the 4 x 200m relay. In fact Susanne agreed to compete at short notice having been injured all season.

In the shot, yours truly threw the 4kg weight, a very novice throw but still scoring 7 points due to there being only two athletes competing in the over 35 age group. Nicki Murphy and Susanne Dietrich (both O50) threw and jumped in the over 35 and over 50 age group respectively to maximise points. In fact this was Nicki Murphy’s debut hammer throw and she scored 6 points. Well done! Both Joan Trimble and Susanne Dietrich easily won the 200m. I ran alongside Nicki Murphy in the 800m and also Liz Richardson in the 5000m. Liz was very pleased with her time, whereas I was pleased with both my post marathon track time and race position. At the end of a meet the relay is always an exciting race. Susanne, Nicki, Joan and Liz (only just finishing the 5000m) were the athletes in the 4 x 200m relay. It was all very exciting, very close and the team did brilliantly to come 2nd to Epsom & Ewell Harriers. Disappointingly all the starts of the track events were by whistle which meant that they were not official and therefore would not count for the power of 10. After the four matches Kingston & Poly finished a very safe 2nd place behind Epsom and Ewell Harriers. Well done and thank you to all the team – Nicki, Susanne, Liz, Joan, Camilla, Gill, Avelline, Rosaline, Clare, Caroline and Lizzy Searle (hopefully I haven’t forgotten anyone). A big thank you to all the officials and supporters who make these events possible. Nicky Atkins (SCVAC team manager)
